La Conner sits low and close to the water, right on the Swinomish Channel, with Skagit Valley farmland and tidal air pressing in from every direction. It's one of the more distinctive pockets of our Skagit County service area — older homes, waterfront exposure, and a climate that's a notch harsher on exterior materials than folks driving through on a sunny weekend would guess. If you own a home here, you already know the siding takes a beating that a house twenty miles inland doesn't.

What La Conner's Climate Does to Siding

Three things work against exterior materials here, and they work together, not separately.

  • Salt air. Being right on tidal water means a steady, low-level drift of salt-laden moisture. Over years, that accelerates corrosion on fasteners and trim, and it's harder on paint film and caulk joints than dry inland air.
  • Driving rain off the water. Wind off the channel doesn't just fall as rain — it drives sideways into wall assemblies, especially on west- and south-facing elevations. Siding with weak seams, poor lap coverage, or absorbent substrate takes on moisture it can't easily release.
  • A long moss and algae season. Between the marine humidity and the shade many La Conner lots get from mature trees and tight lot lines, north-facing and shaded walls stay damp for long stretches of the year. That's exactly the environment moss, mildew, and algae need to take hold, and it shows up fastest on materials that hold surface moisture.

None of this is unique to La Conner in isolation — it's the same general Puget Sound and Skagit County pattern we see across our service area — but the combination is more concentrated here because of the direct water exposure and low elevation.

Why We Install Only James Hardie Fiber Cement

We made a decision as a company to install one siding system: James Hardie fiber cement, in its ColorPlus factory-finished lines. We don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, or other fiber cement or engineered wood products. That's not a marketing angle — it's because of climates exactly like La Conner's.

Fiber cement is non-combustible and dimensionally stable, meaning it doesn't swell, cup, or warp the way wood-based products can when they take on repeated moisture cycling. Hardie's HZ5 product line is engineered specifically for climates with prolonged damp exposure, which fits this stretch of the county well. The ColorPlus finish is baked on at the factory under controlled conditions, which holds up better against the fading and chalking that salt air and UV exposure cause over time compared to field-applied paint.

We're not going to tell you other materials are junk — vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild climates, and engineered wood products have real fans. But on a waterfront-adjacent home with driving rain and a long moss season, we've seen where those products struggle: seams that let water in behind the panel, substrates that absorb moisture faster than they release it, and finishes that need more frequent upkeep than most homeowners want to sign up for. We'd rather install one product correctly than sell several and hope.

How We Handle a La Conner Siding Job

Every home here gets looked at for its specific exposure before we talk product or price:

  • Elevation-by-elevation assessment. The wall facing the channel and prevailing wind needs different flashing and joint detailing than a sheltered side yard.
  • Flashing and moisture management first. Correct fiber cement installation depends on what's happening behind the siding — house wrap, flashing at windows and doors, and proper drainage gaps matter as much as the panel itself.
  • Fastener and trim choices suited to salt exposure. We spec hardware and trim details with the marine air in mind, not just what's cheapest to source.
  • Correct clearances and gaps at grade, decks, and rooflines so moss and moisture don't get a foothold at the joints where most siding failures actually start.

A Local Crew That Knows This Stretch of Skagit County

La Conner homes vary — some are close to a century old, some are newer builds on infill lots, and plenty sit right up against tidal water or drainage. A crew that's worked this area understands the difference between a straightforward re-side and a home that needs real moisture-management work done first. We're not guessing at what Skagit County weather does to a house; we see it on every job.

Beyond Siding

We also handle roofing, windows, and decks, since exterior problems in a place like La Conner rarely show up in isolation — a roof that's letting moisture into a wall cavity, or a deck ledger that's trapping water against siding, can undo even a well-installed exterior if it's not addressed together. When we look at your siding, we're looking at the whole envelope.

If you're noticing moss buildup, soft spots, peeling paint, or just want an honest read on how your current siding is holding up against La Conner's salt air and rain, we're happy to take a look. Reach out for a free, no-pressure estimate — we'll walk the exterior with you and tell you straight what we see.
