Footings and Frost
The part of a deck that actually determines its lifespan is buried in the ground. Footings need to be sized and set to the depth required by local code, resting on solid, undisturbed soil — not just poured into a shallow hole that looked deep enough. In a valley with real winter freeze-thaw cycling, a footing set too shallow can shift slightly year over year, and that movement eventually telegraphs up through the whole structure as squeaks, gaps, or a rail that's gone slightly out of plumb.
Sizing for the Actual Load
